The Conversation

Sometimes I think I like what good — and great — critics write and say about art just as much as the art itself.

Here’s an example: A.O. Scott’s review of The Conversation.

Tim Clark on Communication

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

I re-read Tim’s piece again tonight and find it resonating even more than the first time I read it. Talking and meeting has more fidelity than email. The comments discussion at the end reveals some of the real challenges I find too in avoiding email. In no order, they are:

  • you gotta finish what someone else started (ie, there is an expectation from customers, bosses, and stake-holders that you will respond to email, even if you try to not create email for everyone)
  • different time zones, different locations
  • chopping up tasks and communications in a distributed environment can actually help using email

I suspect though, that everyone would agree we have to do something about over-email. This makes you start thinking about it, if nothing else.

Great article on Word Bloat

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Well written article on why Word fails now as a word processor, and full of points about distraction. Love the writing.
